The Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is providing cheap electricity to the people. Despite this, the Mann government has saved 1000 crore. For the last 30 months, 85% of the people in the state have been relieved from paying electricity bills. In the entire country, only Punjab gives its people 300 units of free electricity.

Benefit to the common man

The initiatives implemented by the Punjab government have enabled every family in the state to save 10,000. This endeavour has successfully narrowed the divide between the wealthy and the average citizens. Furthermore, the electrical equipment sector in the state has experienced significant growth over the last two years.

Reopening a closed coal mine offers major benefits

Although the state government is providing free electricity to many people, to meet this expenditure, it has reopened the Pachwara mine, which had been inactive for several years, allowing for the extraction of a significant quantity of inexpensive coal.

The Pachwara coal mine, which had been inactive since 2015, resumed operations in 2022, allowing for the procurement of affordable coal from Coal India Limited. To date, 92 lakh metric tonnes of coal have been extracted, with each lakh metric tonne costing 11 crore less. This development has ensured that thermal power plants are not experiencing coal shortages, and residents of the state are benefiting from readily available, inexpensive electricity.

In the past, thermal plants in Punjab had coal reserves that could sustain operations for only seven to ten days. However, this situation has greatly improved. The Shri Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant now has a coal stock that lasts for 26 days, while the Shri Guru Amardas Thermal Plant can operate for 28 days on its current supply. Furthermore, the Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Power Plant has coal reserves that will last for 35 days.

The Punjab government had acquired the GVK thermal plant located in Goindwal Sahib, which was later renamed as Shri Guru Amardas Thermal Plant. The government bought this plant at the rate of 2 crore per megawatt; the capacity of the plant is 540 megawatt. Through this plant alone, the government is saving 350 crore every year.
